Papagayo Peninsula

The Papagayo Peninsula has become synonymous with the Four Seasons Resort, the Grand Papagayo in Playa Buena and Allegro Papagayo in Playa Manzanillo. But these hotels are just part of a larger development project taking place in the breathtaking Papagayo region.

In reality, Papagayo actually refers to the ‘Golfo de Papagayo’ (Papagayo Gulf), a body of water that stretches from Playa Ocotal in the South, to the Peninsula Santa Elena in the North which is part of the Santa Rosa National Park. The Gulf contains one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Costa Rica.

The ‘Papagayo Project’ specifically, is the region from Playa Panama, Panama and around the Culebra Bay to the Peninsula de Papagayo. You may also see signs referring to the ‘Polo Turístico Golfo de Papagayo’, tourist pole of the Papagayo Gulf. This is where development is taking place to build resort hotels (all-inclusive mainly) and rental or private villas. With the Four Seasons and Occidental Hotels groups leading the way, other property developers have been encouraged to bring their wealth to this region.  The Mandrian Oriental and Sol Melia have both announced plans to begin construction this year. With the Liberia International $35 million dollar expansion, the addition of the CIMA Hospita and the Clinica Biblica Hospital, medical tourism is on the brink of exploding in this direct area.

Unlike over-built up beach resort areas like Cancun, Acapulco and Conzumel in Mexico, developers of the Papagayo Project are working hand in hand with the Costa Rican government to make sure that development occurs in such a way as to cause the least impact on the environment. Ensuring that the very reason for visiting this beautiful area is protected and nurtured as much as possible. Careful planning in which nature and luxury resorts can coexist is perhaps the main attraction of Papagayo, Costa Rica.

All eyes are directed at the Papagayo Region including the largest Real Estate Board in Costa Rica, CCCBR who have established a Papagayo Regional Office at the Hacienda Del Mar – Remax Pretsige Ocean Properties Sales Center in Playa Panama. With well over 550 members they too see the growth potential of the area and can now offer San Jose realtors qualified realtor referral options on area properties.

I have sailed the waters of the Gulf of Papagayo for over 16 years, exploring Costa Rica’s natural beauty by sea and this is truly one of the most incredible areas I have ever seen.

The Gulf of Papagayo is located on the stunningly beautiful Northwest Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The majority of this area has been designated a National Park known as Santa Rosa. The crown jewel of the area is a gorgeous pristine bay called Bahia Culebra, which is very quickly becoming one of the world’s premier Resort and Second Home destinations. In the 1970’s the Government of Costa Rica designated the Gulf of Papagayo strictly for Resort and Second Home Tourism Development. They picked this area for three main reasons: Weather; The Gold Coast of Guanacaste has more days of sunshine and the least amount of rain than anywhere in the country. Water; This is one of the only areas in the country with tranquil calm bays, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, water sports, fishing, boating and marinas as there are no rip tides or dangerous currents like other parts of the coast. For those that love surfing, Witches Rock, one of the top surf destinations in the world, is just a few minutes away. Airport; The Daniel Oduber Airport opened in 2004. It has recently under gone an $18 million expansion making it one of the nicest International Airports in Central America.

A short 20 minute drive to most beaches in the Gulf of Papagayo makes it very convenient after a day of travel. Just a few minutes after you land, you can be enjoying a cocktail on your patio and watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. The cornerstone for the future growth of this region is a mega project known as Peninsula Papagayo which encompasses 2,300 acres, 15 miles of coastline and 31 separate beaches. The Anchor tenant is the  Four Seasons Resort and Residences  which has become the brand’s Flagship Resort Hotel, and whose shareholders include, Bill Gates and Saudi Princes.

There is also a $25 million Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course and a new $15 million Marina and a $7 million Beach Club. The long term development plan of Peninsula Papagayo will feature 9 of the top hotels in the world, a 375 slip marina and 3 signature golf courses, with the next course being a Jack Nicklaus signature course. There will also be multiple Beach clubs, Tennis, Fitness and Equestrian centers. The rest Culebra Bay is the home and will become the home to over a dozen other high end resorts; Hilton, Occidental Allegro, Occidental Gran Papagayo, Westin Papagayo, Viceroy, Mandarin, Melia, Hyatt and Starwood to name a few. Another Mega project in the planning stages is Cacique Costa Rica that encompasses Punta Cacique which is the 600 acre point between Playa Hermosa and Playas del Coco. The Cacique Costa Rica is being developed by Steve Case’s Revolution Resorts and will include a One and Only Resort, Miraval Spa, Exclusive Resorts, Andre Agassi Tennis Center and Michael Cousteau Aquatic Center. Cacique Costa Rica will also develop for sale Residential Property that will certainly become some of the highest valued properties in the world. Cacique Costa Rica.
